The Digital SAT Math section covers four domains. Understanding what each one tests is the starting point for targeted preparation.
Algebra is the largest domain, typically accounting for roughly a third of questions. It covers linear equations in one and two variables, linear functions, systems of two linear equations, and linear inequalities. The core skill is fluency with algebraic manipulation: isolating variables, substituting between equations, and interpreting graphs of linear functions.
The most common student errors are sign mistakes when rearranging equations, incorrect substitution in systems, and misreading inequality direction when multiplying or dividing by a negative. Students who check by substituting their answer back into the original equation avoid most of these errors. Desmos is useful for systems: graph both lines and read the intersection point directly.
Advanced Math focuses on equivalent expressions, nonlinear equations and systems, and nonlinear functions including quadratics and exponentials. Questions require factoring, expanding, completing the square, applying the quadratic formula, and interpreting nonlinear functions from equations and graphs.
Desmos provides the clearest time advantage here. Graphing a quadratic and reading the zeros or vertex is typically faster than algebraic manipulation. The key student error is sign mistakes in factoring or when applying the quadratic formula. For equivalent expression questions, substituting a simple value and checking which answer choice produces the same result is a reliable strategy.
This domain tests quantitative reasoning rather than algebraic manipulation. It includes ratios, rates and proportional relationships, percentages, one-variable data analysis (mean, median, range, spread), two-variable data (scatter plots, line of best fit), probability and conditional probability, and interpreting statistical claims from study descriptions.
Students often underestimate this domain because the algebra is simpler, but the reasoning required is careful. Common errors include confusing mean with median, misreading conditional probability (the denominator changes), and drawing causal conclusions from correlational data. The statistical claims questions require no calculation but do require reading carefully and understanding the difference between association and causation.
Geometry and Trigonometry covers area and volume formulas, properties of lines and angles, triangle properties including similar triangles, right triangle trigonometry (SOH CAH TOA and special angles), and circles including arc length and sector area. The Digital SAT provides a reference sheet with key formulas, so knowing when to apply them matters more than memorising them.
Right triangle trigonometry is a consistent source of lost marks. The key is identifying the correct ratio relative to the given angle and the sides you know versus need. For circles, the most common error is confusing radius with diameter. Desmos is helpful for circle questions in the coordinate plane: entering the standard form equation shows centre and radius immediately.
