Pre-IPO Investment Thesis

Project Brief: 

A Singapore based multi-family office advises it’s clients on global investments and managing $1b+ of assets under advisory. A portion of client portfolio is allocated to alternative investments including high growth tech Unicorns at a pre-IPO stage. They are exploring 3 names to create a portfolio of around $50m.

 

Project Description: 

Develop comprehensive investment theses for 1 late-stage private technology companies selected from: ByteDance, Revolut and Anthropic

Select 1 company in Week 1, then produce detailed analysis including business model evaluation, competitive positioning, financial analysis, valuation, and investment recommendation (BUY/HOLD/PASS).

  • Week 1 (Mar 9-15): Project kickoff & prelim research to shortlist
  • Week 2 (Mar 16-22): Extensive fundamental research and analysis
  • Week 3 (Mar 23-Mar 29): Continue with research and practical aspects to be analyzed including sourcing 
  • Week 4 (Mar 30-Apr 5): Final submission and presentation
Project Highlight & Challenges:

Very topical investment focus for many institutional and private client investors. Segment seen significant growth both in terms of volume and value of the underlying assets. Key challenge for investment is availability of data to analyze and sourcing of the investment asset.

Week-on-week suggested progress

  • Week 1: 
      • Research all 3 companies at high level
      • Develop screening framework to evaluate options
      • Select 1 company for deep analysis (Week 1 decision point)
      • Begin preliminary research on selected company
    • Week 2: 
      • Deep competitive analysis of your selected company
      • Build comprehensive financial model depending on data availability or focus on extensive Peer Analysis for valuation (historical + projections)
      • Market opportunity sizing (TAM/SAM, growth trajectory)
      • Detailed risk assessment (regulatory, competitive, operational, financial)
    • Week 3: 
      • Determine fair value range and compare to last funding round
      • Determine valuation methodology (commonly peer comparison method, DCF could be difficult)
      • Assess investment sourcing strategy (how to actually buy the shares). This leg is optional, pls decide based on time and team capacity 
      • Deep dive into each of the investment areas being covered (ok to exclude a few for lack of time)
